Storm of Steel

By Ernst Jünger

Categories: History

Ernst Jünger's memoir of his service as a German soldier and officer on the Western Front, from December 1914 to August 1918, was first printed privately in 1920. Jünger describes trench warfare in graphic detail: leading raiding parties, defending trenches against British attacks and enduring shellfire that killed his comrades. Largely free of commentary, the book is often read as morally ambivalent or even pro-war. This Penguin Modern Classics edition is Michael Hofmann's translation.
