German soldiers raid Tarzan's East African estate in the opening chapters of Tarzan the Untamed (1920), set during World War I. Finding the house in ruins, Tarzan believes that Jane is dead. He wages a one-man war against the German army, crosses paths with a young woman he suspects of being a spy, and travels through a waterless desert to Xuja, a lost city whose people keep lions and are touched by madness.
