Team of Rivals
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs
Doris Kearns Goodwin's 2005 book is a group biography of Abraham Lincoln and three men who ran against him for the 1860 Republican nomination: William Seward, Salmon Chase and Edward Bates. After winning the presidency, Lincoln appointed all three to his cabinet. Goodwin shows how he drew on their talents and managed their ambitions to hold the government together through the Civil War, and how former rivals came to serve his vision of the Union.
