The Alexandria Quartet
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Alexandria Quartet is a tetralogy of novels by the British writer Lawrence Durrell, made up of Justine (1957), Balthazar (1958), Mountolive (1958) and Clea (1960) and set in Alexandria, Egypt, before and during World War II. The first three novels tell overlapping versions of the same events from different perspectives, revolving around the enigmatic Justine, her husband Nessim and the narrator Darley, while the fourth moves the story forward in time. Lush, experimental, the quartet explores love, politics, memory and the nature of truth.
