Dostoevsky's final novel, serialized from 1879 to 1880, is the story of a murdered father and the sons who each had a motive to kill him. Fyodor Karamazov is a crude, greedy landowner. His sons are Dmitry, a passionate sensualist; Ivan, a skeptical intellectual; and Alyosha, a gentle novice monk, while the servant Smerdyakov is rumored to be his illegitimate son. Through a love rivalry, a murder investigation and a courtroom drama, the novel explores God, free will and morality.
