The Clicking of Cuthbert
Categories: Humor & Entertainment, Literature & Fiction
The Clicking of Cuthbert (1922; U.S. title Golf Without Tears) opened Wodehouse's run of golf stories. Most are narrated by the Oldest Member, a club sage who explains every human problem in terms of golf. In the title story, Cuthbert Banks, a fine golfer with no interest in books, courts a woman devoted to literature, and his chance comes when the Russian novelist Vladimir Brusiloff visits her suburban literary society.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
