Categories: Literature & Fiction
Alexandre Dumas's adventure novel, serialized from 1844 to 1846, opens in Marseille in 1815, just before Napoleon's return from exile. Edmond Dantès, a young sailor about to be made captain and to marry his fiancée Mercédès, is betrayed by jealous rivals and imprisoned without trial in the island fortress of the Château d'If. The story follows his long confinement and his resolve to learn who wronged him, in a tale of justice, revenge and mercy set across France, Italy and the Mediterranean.
