Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Devil's Own Work is a 1991 novella by British writer Alan Judd, author of A Breed of Heroes. It won the Guardian Fiction Prize and is a modern variation on the Faust legend. The narrator recalls his friend Edward, an ambitious young writer in London who meets a celebrated elderly author shortly before his death. Edward soon becomes famous himself, but his success seems tied to a mysterious manuscript and to Eudoxie, the old man's widow, and the price of fame grows clear.
