Anne Frank received a diary for her thirteenth birthday in June 1942, weeks before her family went into hiding in the sealed-off annex behind her father's Amsterdam business. Writing to an imagined friend she calls Kitty, she records two years of quarrels, boredom, hunger and fear of discovery among eight people in cramped rooms, and her hope of becoming a writer. This Definitive Edition, edited by Otto H. Frank and Mirjam Pressler and translated by Susan Massotty, restores passages cut from earlier editions.
