The Double and The Gambler
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Double and The Gambler pairs two short novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky in the translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. In The Double (1846), a timid St. Petersburg clerk, Golyadkin, meets a man identical to him who takes over his job and his life. In The Gambler (1866), written in a few weeks to meet a deadline, a young tutor in a German spa town is consumed by roulette and by his love for Polina.
