The Dry Heart (1947) is a short novel by Italian writer Natalia Ginzburg about a troubled marriage. The book opens with the narrator shooting her husband, Alberto. She then recounts how she, a lonely schoolteacher, met and married him, and how his indifference and his long relationship with another woman gradually wore her down, in a spare portrait of loneliness and the limits placed on women's lives.
