The Edible Woman is Margaret Atwood's first published novel, released in 1969, a darkly comic story set in Toronto that established themes she would explore throughout her career. Marian McAlpin, a young woman working at a market research firm, becomes engaged to her boyfriend Peter and then finds she is gradually unable to eat, first meat and then more and more foods, as her body seems to rebel against the consumer society and the conventional role expected of her.
