Categories: Animals, History

The Elephant in the Greek and Roman World (Thames & Hudson, 1974) is classical historian H. H. Scullard's study of elephants in the ancient Mediterranean. Scullard begins with the animals Alexander the Great met in Persia and India and follows their military use by Hellenistic kings and Hannibal, whose elephants crossed the Alps in 218 BC, and the battle of Raphia, where Indian and African elephants met. He also shows how Romans displayed and depicted elephants in triumphs, games and art.
