Coleman Barks's collection gathers his versions of poems by Rumi, the thirteenth-century Persian poet and Sufi mystic, arranged by theme. Working from earlier scholarly translations rather than the original Persian, Barks recasts the poems in plain American free verse. The poems turn on love, longing and the search for the divine, and short notes introduce each section. This reissue keeps the collection that brought Rumi to a wide American readership in the 1990s.
