The Female Emigrant's Guide
Categories: History
The Female Emigrant's Guide, and Hints on Canadian Housekeeping (1854) is a practical handbook by the English-Canadian author and naturalist Catharine Parr Traill, published in Toronto by Maclear. Later editions were retitled The Canadian Settler's Guide. Drawing on her own life as a settler in Upper Canada, Traill advises women emigrating to the Canadian backwoods on household work and food, with instructions for making bread, soap, candles and maple sugar and guidance on the realities of settler life.
