The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery
By Eric Foner
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
In this 2010 history, Eric Foner traces how Abraham Lincoln's thinking about slavery evolved across his career, from his Illinois legislative days to the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment. Lincoln hated slavery but long favored gradual emancipation and the colonization of freed people abroad. Foner shows how abolitionists, Radical Republicans, Black Americans and the pressures of the Civil War pushed him toward immediate emancipation and the enlistment of Black soldiers in the Union army.
