The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad

By Fareed Zakaria

Categories: Politics & Social Sciences

In The Future of Freedom (2003), journalist Fareed Zakaria argues that democracy and liberty are not the same thing, developing an idea from his 1997 Foreign Affairs essay on illiberal democracy. Zakaria contends that elections without constitutional liberalism, the rule of law and protection of rights can produce illiberal governments, as in several countries after the Cold War. He also argues that the United States has become too democratic in some ways, weakening institutions that check popular passions.
