By Philip Roth
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Philip Roth's 1979 novel, the first of his Zuckerman books, is set in 1956, when Nathan Zuckerman, a young writer, visits the reclusive author E. I. Lonoff at his farmhouse in the Berkshires. There he meets Lonoff's young assistant, Amy Bellette, and imagines that she is Anne Frank, alive after the war, as he worries about his family's anger at his stories.

- Barack Obama: “Some of the great books by Jewish authors like Philip Roth or Saul Bellow, they are steeped with this sense of being an outsider, longing to get in, not sure what you're giving up — what you're willing to give up and what you're not willing to give up.”
