Kyne's short 1921 parable follows Bill Peck, a war veteran who talks Cappy Ricks, the crusty founder of the Ricks Logging & Lumbering Company, into giving him a job, then takes on a sales assignment everyone expects him to fail. When Peck beats his quota, Cappy sets him a harder test: the quest for an elusive blue vase. The story celebrates persistence, honesty and responsibility at work.
