Mario Puzo's 1969 crime novel tells the story of the Corleones, a fictional Mafia family in New York City and Long Island, between 1945 and 1955. It opens at the wedding of Don Vito Corleone's daughter, where he receives requests for favors and conducts business. When a rival family moves into the drug trade, the Corleones are drawn into war, and Vito's youngest son, Michael, who wanted to stay out of the family business, is pulled in. The novel was adapted as the 1972 film.
