After a night-time prank in which a statue of the local member of Parliament is covered in tar, a small gold cricket bat, a school trophy, is lost at the scene. Whoever finds it could expose the culprits. Trevor, the rugby captain, is drawn into the hunt, while O'Hara and Moriarty try to stay out of trouble and a secret society called the League sends threatening notes.

- Fareed Zakaria: “P. G. Wodehouse. I’ve read almost everything he wrote. He once explained that there were two ways of writing novels. “One is mine, making the thing a sort of musical comedy without music, ignoring real life altogether; the other is going right down deep into life and not caring a damn.” He did the former better than almost anyone.”
