The Hate U Give

Angie Thomas's 2017 debut young adult novel is narrated by Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old who moves between the poor neighborhood where she lives and the mostly white, affluent prep school she attends. That balance breaks when Starr witnesses a police officer shoot and kill her unarmed childhood friend, Khalil. As the shooting becomes a national story, she must decide what to say and whom to trust under pressure from her community and the police. Thomas expanded the novel from a short story she wrote in college.
