The Histories
By Herodotus
Categories: History
Herodotus of Halicarnassus wrote the Histories in the fifth century BC to record the great war between the Greeks and the Persian Empire and the causes behind it. Ranging widely first, he describes Croesus of Lydia, Cyrus the Great, the customs of Egypt and the nomadic Scythians, weaving in accounts he gathered on his journeys. The narrative builds to Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea. This Penguin Classics edition uses Aubrey de Sélincourt's translation, revised by John Marincola, who adds an introduction and notes.
