The Ides of March
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Thornton Wilder's 1948 novel reconstructs the final months of Julius Caesar's life through invented letters, diaries, reports and documents. Caesar writes to his friend Lucius Mamilius Turrinus, while Cleopatra, the poet Catullus, Cicero and the aristocrat Clodia Pulcher add their own voices to the record. Wilder arranges the material in four overlapping sections that circle the conspiracy against Caesar, building a picture of a ruler reflecting on power, religion, love and destiny in late republican Rome.
