Categories: Literature & Fiction
Elie Wiesel's novel, first published in French in 1999, opens when a flight from Tel Aviv to New York makes an emergency landing in a snowstorm in Connecticut. Five passengers are taken in by a stranger who calls himself the Judge. He holds them captive and announces that one of them must die. As the hours pass, each must account for his or her life and decide what makes a life worth sparing.
