Each chapter unfolds as a conversation with people from different walks of life, among them a house cleaner from Peru, a Syrian immigrant restaurateur and a trans drag performer, who speak about love, loss, desire, betrayal, grief, faith, aging and resilience. Van Diggelen weaves her own experiences into these encounters rather than building a single argument.
