The Man Who Stayed Behind (Duke University Press, 2001) is the memoir of Sidney Rittenberg, written with journalist Amanda Bennett. Sent to China by the US military in the 1940s, Rittenberg stayed for thirty-five years, joined the Chinese Communist Party and worked alongside Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai. Twice imprisoned as a suspected spy, he spent sixteen years in solitary confinement. Covering 1949 through the Cultural Revolution, the book weighs his own mistakes and those of the leadership.
