The Master and Margarita
By Mikhail Bulgakov
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Mikhail Bulgakov wrote this novel in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940, and a censored version was first published after his death, in 1966–67. The devil arrives in Moscow with a strange retinue, including a giant talking cat, and torments a city whose officials no longer believe in God. Alongside this satire runs a story set in ancient Jerusalem about Pontius Pilate, written by a persecuted author known as the Master, whose lover, Margarita, is drawn into the devil's games.
