The Old Man and the Sea is a novella by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction he published in his lifetime. Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, has gone 84 days without catching a fish. Confident that his bad luck is at an end, he sets off alone far into the Gulf Stream and hooks a marlin so big that he cannot pull it in. For two days and two nights, the giant fish pulls him out to sea.
