The Old Way

Anthropologist Elizabeth Marshall Thomas was nineteen in 1950 when she first went to the Kalahari to live among the San, hunter-gatherers whose way of life reached back thousands of generations. Thomas, who first described them in The Harmless People (1959), returns to those years in this 2006 book. She shows how San skills and customs echo the survival strategies of our animal ancestors, and she argues that their way of life reveals much about human evolution.
