The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs, History
Jeanne Theoharis's 2013 biography challenges the image of Rosa Parks as meek or accidental. It presents a lifelong activist whose work began two decades before her 1955 arrest on a Montgomery bus and continued for decades after. Theoharis covers the hardship the Parks family faced after the boycott, including lost jobs and death threats that drove them from Montgomery to Detroit. There Parks worked in the office of Congressman John Conyers and challenged segregation in housing, schools and jobs, as well as police brutality.
