The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self
By Carl Trueman
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences, Religion & Spirituality
In The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self (2020), theologian and historian Carl Trueman traces the intellectual history behind expressive individualism and the sexual revolution in the West. Drawing on Philip Rieff, Charles Taylor and Alasdair MacIntyre, Trueman follows ideas about the self through Rousseau, the Romantic poets, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud and Wilhelm Reich. He argues that these thinkers explain how identity came to be understood as inward and psychological, and what that shift means for debates about sexuality.
