Alice Walker's 1996 book, subtitled Honoring the Difficult, recounts the making of Steven Spielberg's 1985 film of her novel The Color Purple. Drawing on journals, letters and articles, she writes about her role as a consultant, the criticism the novel and film received, her illness with Lyme disease, her mother's death and her relationships at the time, and she includes her own original screenplay for the film.
