The Savior Generals: How Five Great Commanders Saved Wars That Were Lost
Categories: History
The military historian Victor Davis Hanson profiles five commanders who rescued wars that seemed lost: Themistocles at Salamis, Belisarius for the Byzantine Empire, William Tecumseh Sherman in the drive on Atlanta, Matthew Ridgway in Korea and David Petraeus during the surge in Iraq. Hanson argues that such men often arrived late, after others had failed, and succeeded through unconventional strategy, restored morale and grasped the political stakes. He notes how often their reward was controversy or obscurity.
