The Sentinel
Categories: Science Fiction & Fantasy
The Sentinel (1983) is a collection of Arthur C. Clarke short stories. It includes The Sentinel, the 1951 story that became the seed of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Star, about astronauts who discover what destroyed an ancient civilization. Clarke gathers work that helped define postwar science fiction's interest in space, deep time, first contact with the alien and the limits of human knowledge.

- Neil deGrasse Tyson: “Otherwise, I'm a bit old-school. Sci-fi seems to make great short stories. Two from Arthur C Clarke: The Sentinel (1951) and the Star (1955), I think about those often, the first of which served as taproots for the film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).”
