The Shortest History of Migration
By Ian Goldin
Categories: History, Politics & Social Sciences
The Shortest History of Migration (Old Street, 2024) is Oxford economist Ian Goldin's brief history of human movement, from the first dispersal out of Africa to the present. Using historical records and genetic research, Goldin follows migration through trade, empire, slavery and war to modern mass movements and displacement caused by conflict and climate change. He argues that migration has been central to human survival, innovation and cultural exchange, while acknowledging its coercion and suffering, and argues for humane, well-managed policies.
