The Stranger
By Albert Camus
Categories: Literature & Fiction
The Stranger (1942) is the first novel by Albert Camus, about a detached young man in French Algeria. Meursault, a clerk in Algiers, attends his mother's funeral without showing grief and resumes his ordinary life, beginning an affair and befriending a neighbour. On a hot day at the beach, he kills an Arab man, and his trial focuses as much on his indifference and lack of remorse as on the crime itself.
