The Stranger in the Woods: The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit

By Michael Finkel

Categories: Biographies & Memoirs

The Stranger in the Woods (2017) is journalist Michael Finkel's account of Christopher Knight, who walked into the woods of central Maine in 1986 at the age of twenty and lived alone there for twenty-seven years. Knight spoke to almost no one and survived by stealing food and supplies from nearby cabins, which made him a local legend until his arrest in 2013. Drawing on his conversations with Knight, Finkel explores why he left, how he endured the winters and what solitude did to him.
