The Taming of the Shrew
Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction
Framed as a play performed for Christopher Sly, a drunken tinker tricked into believing he is a lord, Shakespeare's comedy first appeared in the 1623 First Folio. In Padua, Baptista refuses to let his younger daughter, Bianca, marry before her sharp-tongued sister, Katherine. Petruchio, a fortune hunter from Verona, sets out to woo and tame Katherine, while Bianca's suitors adopt disguises. Its treatment of marriage and obedience has long divided audiences and critics.
