The first Hardy Boys mystery, published in 1927, introduces teenage brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, sons of detective Fenton Hardy, in the town of Bayport. When a reckless driver speeds past them and their friend Chet Morton's car is stolen, the boys start investigating. The trail leads to a theft of jewels and securities at Tower Mansion, home of the eccentric Hurd Applegate, where the caretaker, the father of a school friend, falls under suspicion.
