The Trees (2021) is a satirical crime novel by Percival Everett set in Money, Mississippi, the town where Emmett Till was murdered in 1955. When white men in the town are found dead beside the body of a Black man who resembles Till, two detectives from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrive to investigate. As similar killings spread across the country, the novel confronts the history of lynching in America with dark humour.
