The World According to Joan Didion
Categories: Biographies & Memoirs
Journalist and professor Evelyn McDonnell's 2023 portrait explores how Joan Didion saw the world and turned it into prose. Instead of a straight chronology, McDonnell organizes her chapters around physical motifs from Didion's writing, among them the snake, the typewriter, the hotel, the notebook and the girl. She follows Didion's path from Sacramento, Los Angeles and Malibu to Manhattan, Miami and Hawaii, drawing on published and unpublished work and on conversations with people who knew her. Photographs and illustrations accompany the text.
