Categories: Literature & Fiction

The Wren, The Wren is a 2023 novel by the Irish writer Anne Enright, winner of the Booker Prize for The Gathering, published in the United States by W. W. Norton. It follows three generations of one Dublin family: Nell, a young woman testing her independence and her heart, her mother Carmel, and the shadow of Carmel's father, Phil McDaragh, a celebrated poet who abandoned his wife and daughters. His poems run through the book as the women reckon with the cost of his genius and the nature of love.

• Margaret Atwood: “Gritty, sad, sly, riotous – Anne Enright’s THE WREN, THE WREN (@wwnorton @penguinrandom Sept. 23) takes the p*ss out of much, including #Irish #poets, mother+father+sister-hoods, bad+good sex +more, in gem-packed language that fizzes like a sidewalk firecracker. Must-read!”
