Timon of Athens

By William Shakespeare

Categories: Drama, Literature & Fiction

Probably written by Shakespeare with Thomas Middleton and printed in the 1623 First Folio, this tragedy follows Timon, a rich Athenian lord who showers gifts and feasts on his friends. When his money runs out, the same friends refuse to help him. Bitter at their ingratitude, Timon abandons Athens for the wilderness, cursing humankind. The cynical philosopher Apemantus and the exiled general Alcibiades offer contrasting responses. Many scholars consider the text unfinished.
