John le Carré's 1974 novel brings George Smiley, pushed out of British intelligence, back to hunt for a Soviet mole at the top of the service, known as the Circus. Working quietly from outside, Smiley sifts old files and questions former colleagues, knowing the traitor must be one of four senior men he once worked beside. The book opens the trilogy that pits Smiley against his Soviet counterpart, an agent known as Karla.
