Tropic of Cancer
By Henry Miller
Categories: Literature & Fiction
Henry Miller's first published novel, brought out by the Obelisk Press of Paris in 1934, follows a penniless American writer through the streets, cafés and borrowed rooms of the city as he scrounges for meals, money and sex. Mixing memoir, rant and lyrical reverie, the narrator drifts among expatriate friends such as Boris, Carl, Van Norden and Fillmore. Banned as obscene in America, the novel was published by Grove Press in 1961, prompting prosecutions that ended with a 1964 Supreme Court decision.
