Elie Wiesel's novel, first published in French in 1987, follows Raphael Lipkin, a professor and Holocaust survivor who begins receiving anonymous late-night calls questioning the past of Pedro, the man who once rescued him. His search for the truth takes him to a psychiatric clinic in the Catskill Mountains whose patients believe they are figures from the Bible, and leads him to confront questions about madness and faith.
