Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts
By Rebecca Hall
Categories: History
Wake (2021) is a graphic history by historian Rebecca Hall, illustrated by Hugo Martínez, about women who led revolts against slavery. Hall searches archives in New York, London and elsewhere for traces of enslaved women who fought back, from uprisings on slave ships during the Middle Passage to the 1712 revolt in New York. She weaves her own research and family history into the story, imagining lives that official records left out.
