When Race Trumps Merit: How the Pursuit of Equity Sacrifices Excellence, Destroys Beauty, and Threatens Lives
Categories: Politics & Social Sciences
When Race Trumps Merit is a 2023 book by Heather Mac Donald, author of The War on Cops, published by DW Books. Mac Donald argues that the push for racial equity after 2020 led institutions to lower standards where merit matters most. Her chapters cover medicine and science, classical music, opera and art museums, and law enforcement. She contends that gaps in academic skills and in crime rates, not systemic racism, explain the disparities that institutions blame on bias, and warns that equity mandates endanger excellence and lives.
