Widow Basquiat (2000) is Jennifer Clement's portrait of the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and his lover Suzanne Mallouk in 1980s New York. Drawing on Mallouk's memories, Clement tells in short, lyrical sections the story of their turbulent relationship, from Mallouk's arrival in New York as a young woman to Basquiat's rise in the art world, his drug addiction and his death in 1988. The book also traces Mallouk's own life and the downtown scene they shared.
